What happened on this day in history? 16th September.
In 1620 The Mayflower departed from Plymouth, England. The ship carried the first English Puritans, known today as the Pilgrims and they were Calvinist Protestants seeking religious freedom from the King of England. When they reached America, 66 days later, they never made any attempts to convert outsiders to their faith, including the Native Americans they encountered in America. The event that Americans commonly call the “First Thanksgiving” was celebrated by the Pilgrims after their first harvest in the New World in October 1621 and was attended by 90 Native Americans and 53 Pilgrims.
In 1630 The village of Shawmut changed its name to Boston, after a city in the United Kingdom. Boston is home to the oldest public park and the first subway in the United States ,in 1897. Boston’s Ted Williams Tunnel is the deepest in North America, running nearly 90 feet underneath the earth’s surface. Bostonians couldn’t celebrate Christmas between 1659 and 1681 as It was against the law. The biggest art theft to date occurred in Boston.
In 1908 General Motors Corporation was founded in Flint, Michigan by William C Durant and was one of the world’s largest manufacturers of cars and trucks. The company manufactured Buick, Cadillac, Chevrolet, Pontiac, and Hummer brand cars. GM is famous for building the Lunar Roving Vehicle, also known as the Moon Buggy. They included the first air conditioning system, the first fully automatic transmission,the first to invent electric fuel invention, first anti-lock braking system and they were the first to install turn signals, on Buick cars.
In 1932 Mahatma Gandhi begins a hunger strike in protest of the British government’s decision to separate India’s electoral system by caste. Government nutritionists were called in to explain how Gandhi could go 21 days without food. His causes included civil rights for women and the fair treatment of all people regardless of religion. Gandhi is often called Bapu in India, a term of endearment that means “father.” . His famous quote is “You must be the change you wish to see in the world.”
In 1963 Malaysia is created, including Singapore who left the arrangement two years later. Malaysia has a unique rotating monarchy system, in which nine ethnic Malay state rulers take turns as king for five-year terms. Kuala Lumpur is home to the Petronas Towers – the twin architectural titans which were ranked as the world’s tallest building until 2004 ,at 451.9 meters high. It includes the Sarawak Chamber – the largest known cave chamber on the planet that could accommodate 40 Boeing 747s without the planes having to overlap their wings.
